FREE Childbirth Education Workshops

Over the next few months I am offering FREE childbirth education workshops.

My name is Chantal Eder and I am a yoga instructor in NYC, specialising in Alignment, Back Care, and Pre & Postnatal wellness. I am a certified Postnatal fitness specialist and am currently being certified as a Childbirth Educator with Birthing From Within USA.

The certification process is 9 months long and during that time I am looking for families who would like to work with me on the material. Birthing From Within was founded by Midwife Pam England, and was one of the main guides I used during my pregnancy. Their philosophies centre around birth as a heroic journey, addressing not only birth data and techniques, but diving deeper into our inner process throughout pregnancy and birth.

Each workshop will be different and cover one portion of an overall child birth education class. You can choose to work with me through your entire pregnancy or dip your toes into the experience by booking a singular workshop.

Workshop topics and exercises may include: mindfulness, ceremony, birth art, interventions, cesarean awareness, pain coping awareness and techniques, postpartum preparation…and much more

“Birthing From Within-trained childbirth educators and doulas bring a depth of inquiry to parents in a variety of ways, including art, mindfulness, visualizations, storytelling, ritual, and ceremony. In all situations, our members are mentors, guiding parents through the unknown so that they can fully experience the transformation that birthing a baby brings. Birthing From Within mentors also bring current research into their work, building the bridges between ancient and modern knowing, myth and science, grit and grace.”

The workshops are completely free. Some materials may be required such as journals, bowls, paper etc…it would be helpful if you can provide these. Workshops can take place at your place of work, at home, or in a private studio space (at a cost of $35/hr). Workshops are intended for both the pregnant parent and birth partner but can be done alone if necessary.

1-2 hrs depending on the material

Evening availability Mon, Thurs, Fri, Sat

Daytime availability: Thurs mornings, Sat all day

  • ACTIVE BIRTH || I had the wonderful opportunity to take a 2 hr class, today, with Janet Balaskas, founder of the Active Birth movement, and 'Pregnancy Yoga'.

Active Birth was founded 3 decades ago to combat, what at the time was called 'Active Management' of labour - which favoured medical control over labour and birth and whose goal was to standardize labour to a maximum of 12hrs per woman!

Active Birth was giving labour back to the birthing parent, focusing on 3 key areas:

Janet was one of the first to introduce pregnancy yoga to birth preparation, in the West, and has been helping parents prepare for an ‘Active Birth’ since the early 80s, continuing today out of the @activebirthcentre in London.   • BABY + TODDLER JET LAG || We have traveled to many time zones with this little one from a difference of 1hr to 12!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jet lag can be a terrifying prospect for parents, especially one who already get limited sleep. Adults can push themselves through and adjust a bit quicker but for babies and toddlers it can take up to 10 days, even for minimal time differences.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What we've found (and we've tried it all) is that the best solution is to not fight the jet lag. Follow the baby and toddlers sleep cues and work with them. This can mean going to bed at 4pm in the afternoon as a family or staying up until midnight. But everyday we adjust by 30mins to an hr and we've found this so the quickest way to get J adapted to the time zone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We're on day 3 of our 5hr jet lag here. First night he went to bed at 11:30pm (after a day of no sleep and travel, a late nap at 8pm, and general annoyance of wanting to be home), then 9:30pm, then 9. Up at 11am, 8:30am, and 8am. We'll be back to 7-7 (hopefully) by the weekend. Fortunately for us we get 2 more weeks to enjoy the adjustment!
  • TRAVEL WITH A TODDLER || We have been traveling with this little guy since he was 3 months old. I think this may be his 30+ flight but I have stopped counting!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One thing we have always done to prepare him, even when he was just an infant, is to tell him what is happening. We talk him through the day step by step so he knows what is coming next.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"We pack up our things and put them in a bag so you can have them when you get to X ( we now ask him to help with this) > We get into a car and drive to the airport > We can play and eat at the airport until it's time to get on the 'Jumbo Jet' as he like to say> The plane ride will be as long as ex: a full night's sleep, Breakfast and going to the park, 1 movie length etc...> We get off the plane and get into a car and drive to go see ex: grandma and papa!

Not sure if it sunk in as an infant but as a toddler he knows what comes next and tells us. "Now we're going to go on a jumbo jet! To see Grandma and Papa!". I believe it helps to ease any anxiety and feel like part of the process. Instead of having the process 'happen' to him.

I know I feel displaced and uneasy when I don't know what's happening, so it seems logical to extend the same courtesy to these little people, especially at an age where they feel everything so intensly.

  • MISS LYING ON YOUR BELLY? || Have you found creative ways to fulfill the urge of laying on your front side?

I have to say I am not a fan of sleeping on my side and I used to sprawl out on my stomach everyday to write in my journal, so this pose brought me so much peace and relief and satisfied the urge!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Students often ask me if buying bolsters are worth it, I would say even just for this pose yes! 😜 but really, bolsters in pregnancy are great for so many poses that bring relief and support. Incline laying, side laying, restorative yoga, mild back bending, pelvic support...the list goes on. Curious on how to use them at home drop me a DM and book a private session.

  • SIBLING PREP || This little guy is just starting to grasp that his sister, who he calls 'cockatoo' is in my belly. He says hello to her, yesterday tried to 'bite' her, and pretends she is also in his belly sometimes.

We've gently started to introduce him to the idea of being a big brother. He watches his dad talk to her, we've bought 'What's in there?' and have a few others on the list.

For Christmas we're going to get him his own doll and soon enough start creating space in the home for her. Daniel tiger helps a little too 😊.

  • BACKBENDS IN PREGNANCY || Your body is going through all parts of changes during pregnancy and that includes your spine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Typically as the belly grows the lumbar spine begins to over arch and the back muscles starts to over compensate, the upper back (thoracic spine) behind to round forward with the weight and the shoulders begin to tighten.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We like to focus our pregnancy backbends on the upper back, as deeping the arch in the low back can cause more harm than good, possibly leading to diastatsis recti and pubic symphysis pain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Think of your back bends taking more the shape of a candy cane, opening the chest and hard and keeping the lower spine neutral.

  • COLDS IN PREGNANCY || I've been a bit quiet this week, soaking up some family time but also helping all of us get over an awful cold 🤧. (EDIT: as well of taking lots of help from my husband @mrmck 😄 as he pointed out).

J got hit first and from there we've all gone down. We don't typically take medicine but it's been impossible to breathe and I've been wishing I could take a sudafed.

Being sick in pregnancy (with a toddler)  is tough. Not only is your immune system already low but you can't get the rest you need or may not want to pop a few Tylenol cold to get some relief (some medications are pregnancy safe but check with your care provider).
